 MUSIC DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
 

Title:                           Music Director
Ministry Purpose:      To encourage and provide ways for the congregation to experience God through music.
Reports to:                 Pastor

Position Summary:    Oversees all aspects of CUMC music program. Directs the adult choir and handbell choir.

Responsibilities:

1.      Forms, develops and directs the following music ministries: Celebration Choir is the adult choir (which may on occasion include older youth) meets weekly during the months of September through May. The choir provides special   music in the worship service(s), and offers special presentations at Christmas and Easter; Handbell choir rehearses and presents music for the worship service(s) as determined by director.

2.      Encourages congregational involvement in CUMC’s music programs and helps those participating to further develop their gift of music.

3.      Collaborates with the Alleluia Choir (children’s choir) director on offering children’s music during worship.

4.      Invites, equips and arranges for members or guests to lead choir rehearsals and choir musical offering, or to provide contemporary music, during worship as needed.

5.      Organizes and maintains CUMC library of church music.

6.      Meets with the worship ministry team as needed to discuss upcoming CUMC worship services.

Universal Responsibilities (System Governed): Cares for facility as appropriate; attends staff meetings; maintains appropriate hours; promotes alignment with CUMC leadership goals; encourages healthy patterns of communication; abides by CUMC Behavioral Covenant.

Expectations: The Music Director is a part time, 7 hour/week, 44 week/year position. This includes choir rehearsal, bell rehearsal, worship, and prep time.

Qualifications:

Music: Broad knowledge of sacred and classical music; preferred proficiency in a musical instrument, sight reading and choir direction; excellent musical ear and dedication to quality; preferred familiarity with hymns and hymnals. Appreciation of all styles of music in worship, and ability to integrate them into a blended service.

Communication: Able to listen well and communicate directly; comfortable and able to communicate well within a diverse population.

Flexibility: Able to transition with program changes, both planned and occasionally mid-stream during the service. Able to make transitions that help align worship services and CUMC goals.

Hospitality: Ability to provide a positive, enthusiastic and welcoming presence to the music groups and congregation at large.

Administration: Strong organizational skill; attention to detail.

 

ORGANIST POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:                          Organist
Ministry Purpose:      To enhance our worship experience through music.
Reports to:                 Pastor
Position Summary:    Provides organ and piano music for worship services and choir rehearsals.

Responsibilities:

1.      To provide organ (or piano when appropriate) music for Sunday morning worship services. Requires preparation of a weekly prelude, offertory music, communion and baptism music, postlude, hymns, anthems, solos and other special music, as determined by the weekly order of worship.

2.      To accompany all weekly rehearsals of the Celebration Choir and/or rehearsals of other ensembles or soloists. (Choir rehearses from late August through May; there may be extra choir rehearsals for Christmas and Easter performances.)

3.      To provide organ (or piano) music for any additional services on Christmas Eve and Easter.

4.      To play for weddings and funerals conducted in the church if possible, or to approve organ usage by personnel from other churches/organizations. Compensation for these services is provided by the families.

5.      To arrange for and oversee the maintenance and tuning of the church organ and pianos.

6.      To submit to the office administrator the names and composers of works to be played each Sunday for inclusion in the bulletin.

7.      To attend occasional staff meetings, worship meetings and hymn planning meetings as needed.

8.      To arrange for a substitute organist when not able to be present.

Qualifications:

1.      Excellent competence in organ and piano.

2.      Ability to follow worship order seamlessly, and to make quick decisions when order changes unexpectedly (such as extending offering or communion music). Church experience preferred.

3.      Broad knowledge of sacred and classical music; proficiency in sight reading; familiarity with Christian hymns and hymnals.

4.      Familiarity with and enthusiasm for a wide range of musical and liturgical styles.

5.      Ability to work well with pastor, music staff and worship team.
